New Orleans Cemetery pt.1
October 6th, 2009

Nearly a decade ago now, Kim and I decided to take a road trip down to New Orleans for a long weekend. Neither of us had been before, so once we got off work on that Thursday, we jumped in Kim’s VW and took off from Chicago, driving straight through the night. Dear lord, was that long night of driving. I just remember trying so hard to keep my eyes open in the middle of nowhere Mississippi, surrounded in darkness except for the beams of our headlights, and Kim asleep in the passenger seat beside me. I was terrified that the car might breakdown, and we would be ambushed in the swampland by who knows what.
Somehow though, we made it, pulling into the city around noon. However, we tragically couldn’t check into our hotel room until later in the afternoon. So there we were, walking around the French Quarter like zombies, so absolutely tired. Once we were able to get into our room, we both crashed for a serious nap. A nap that lasted all the way until the following morning. And that’s how we both slept through St. Patrick’s Day in New Orleans.
I think about it now, and I know that we would probably never attempt such a trip these days. Kind of makes me a little sad actually and definitely nostalgic for a more carefree time in our lives. However, as they say, with age brings wisdom. So if we were to do it all over again, this time I think we’d fly!
