The Bean
October 9th, 2009

With all this love I’ve been giving to New York, it’s time I gave a shout to my favorite windy city. Now I’ll be the first to admit that when Mayor Daley helped convince the city of Chicago to start construction on the Millennium Park project, I was a bit skeptical. It certainly didn’t help matters that the eyesore construction seemed to take forever, and there were nearly daily reports of the skyrocketing expenses which ended up close to half a billion dollars. But once the park was finished in 2004, it was immediately clear that Chicago had indeed created an amazing thing.
Millennium Park is now one of my favorite destinations whenever I come back to town for a visit. It’s impossible not to be inspired walking along it’s many paths, while soaking up the gorgeous gardens and incredible architecture. And the Cloud Gate sculpture, nicknamed The Bean and pictured above, is no exception.
I kind of love this photo above because it’s hard to make sense of it, no matter how long you stare. At first glance, it reminds me of oil mixing with water, but then it also kind of makes me think of the swirling dementors from Azkaban. Regardless of what you see in it though, the beauty of The Bean is that when you stand in front of it (or beneath it), it’s amazing reflectiveness just fills you with a childlike sense of awe.
