SXSW ‘11 pt.4

Ah, the Irish Breakfast…nothing beats it. I’m proud to say that I’ve been to all seven SXSW breakfasts sponsored by the good folks at Music From Ireland. In addition to providing some great hangover food, the annual breakfast never fails to disappoint in featuring an eclectic mix of Irish music to start the day. From folk singers to punk rockers and everything in between, it’s a joy on the ears and an event not to be missed if you’re attending SXSW.
One of the highlights of this year’s breakfast was getting to see James Vincent McMorrow (pictured above) play some of the tunes off his recently released debut album, Early in the Morning. Clearly, the word is already starting to get out there for the Dublin singer-songwriter, as BD Riley’s was packed full for his early afternoon set. McMorrow, who could be called Ireland’s answer to Ray LaMontagne, is currently on tour and definitely worth checking out.

SXSW ’11 pt.3

It was at SXSW, five years ago, that Duke Special and I reconnected after having met many years prior while I was studying in England. Since then, we’ve worked on several music videos and documentaries together, and he is easily one of the most talented, and equally nice, people I’ve ever met. So it was an fantastic surprise to find out that he’d been flown in at the last minute to play a set as part of the Northern Ireland party. Having released six albums since his first trip to Austin, Duke’s catalog of music has grown in so many beautifully diverse ways, and it was really great to get a little taste of them all at this show.
It was a quick trip for Duke though as he had to fly back to NYC at the crack of dawn the next morning to rehearse for his upcoming show tomorrow night. He’s been commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to create a series of original songs inspired by the current photography exhibition Stieglitz, Steichen, Strand. If you live in New York and are able, you owe it to yourself to go see this incredibly unique, one-night only performance. I definitely wish I could be there.

SXSW ’11 pt.2

One of the early highlights of this year’s SXSW was getting another chance to see the jumpsuit boys from Detroit, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. I was able to catch these guys last year at The Rumble in LA, and I’ll be the first to admit that I was pretty skeptical of the shelf life of a band with a name like theirs. But there’s a lot more to these dudes than just a gimmicky name. What started as just a side project for Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott (a dead ringer doppelganger for Judah Friedlander), has built some serious momentum over the past year, and it was no surprise that the Paste folks wanted to feature them at their party. While the band’s set was nearly identical to the one I’d heard before, I wasn’t disappointed as I’d been hoping to get to hear them again cover “We Almost Lost Detroit” and “God Only Knows.” And in case you’re wondering – yes, he’s singing into a phone in the pic above.

SXSW ’11 pt.1

Yup, it’s that time of the year again! SXSW came rolling into the streets of Austin this past week, and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the awesome annual music festival for yet another year. I saw some great shows, and I’ve got a slew of pics from my four days in the liberal blueberry of the Lone Star State that I’ll be posting throughout the week. Seemed appropriate though to start with half of ZZ Top, who dropped by to guest spot on a song during The Cringe’s set at Rachel Ray’s Feedback Party. Now I can’t really say that I’m a huge fan of Rachel’s, but I do love that she has her husband’s band play at her party, which she did last year as well. Plus, it was pretty great to see that actual beard in person.

From the rooftop of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, overlooking the Magic Kingdom at sunset, while waiting for our appetizers to be served inside at the mouth watering California Grill. One could certainly do worse…

Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow

“But the most exciting and, by far, the most important part of our Florida project, in fact, the heart of everything well be doing in Disney World, will be our experimental prototype city of tomorrow. We call it EPCOT…(it) will take its cue from the new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative centers of American industry. It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducing testing and demonstrating new materials and new systems. And EPCOT will always be a showcase to the world of the ingenuity and imagination of American free enterprise.”

Where Dreams Come True

“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”
