“Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.”

- Nathaniel Hawthorne

This photo is dedicated to my mom, a passionate caregiver to the Monarch butterfly, and who’s birthday just so happens to be today.  Happy Birthday, Mom!

Huntington pt.1

For those living in or even just visiting Los Angeles, a trip to The Huntington Library is an absolute must.  It took us nearly seven years before we discovered this incredible gem, and I still kick myself for having taken so long to find out about it.

Located in Pasadena, The Huntington not only features a fantastic library and art collection, but it’s also home to one of the most amazing botanical gardens I’ve ever seen.  With over a dozen garden areas, including the Japanese, Rose, Jungle, Palm and Chinese gardens…I’m telling you, it’s unreal.   So when my folks paid us a visit earlier in the year, a trip to the Huntington was at the top of our to-do list, as I knew the gardens would blow them away.  And they did.

The cherry on top of the experience for me was that when we were there, it just so happened to be the last weekend of a Charles Bukowski exhibit on display in the library.  Bukowski being one of my favorite authors, it was a day of inspiration to say the least!

The Three Amigos

The Dogs

Well, technically…two amigos & one amiga.

Omar Little and his two new pals, Jenks (black) and Bailey (brown), on our recent trip back home for the holidays.  If I hadn’t been on the other side of the lens taking this shot, I might think our lil guy was photo-shopped into the pic, as it’s an understatement to say that he’s not a fan of other dogs.  Or at least he wasn’t before this trip.  But with the aid of many treats (as seen above to get the three dogs to stare in the same direction long enough to take a photo), and an extremely kind and playful Bailey, Omar learned how to make some friends.  And I kid you not, it nearly made me cry to see our “son” finally play with some other kids.

Omar pt.3

Omar

Here’s the first pic I took of little Omar back when we met him at the rescue shelter.  To think that this guy was literally only a few hours away from being put down, nearly breaks my heart.  Sure, he can be a handful at times, and we’ve still got some more training to do.  But he’s come a long way in the short time that we’ve had him, and we’re so incredibly grateful to have him in our lives.

If you’re thinking about getting a pet, I seriously can’t encourage you enough to consider rescuing an animal.  There are just so many “Omars” out there needing a good home that the last thing we should be doing as a society is breeding more pets, which directly results in other animals then having to be euthanized.  The internet is littered with different rescue groups, so it’s never been more convenient to find a pet to your liking, and the Humane Society is also a great place to start your search as well.
