Here’s the first pic I took of little Omar back when we met him at the rescue shelter. To think that this guy was literally only a few hours away from being put down, nearly breaks my heart. Sure, he can be a handful at times, and we’ve still got some more training to do. But he’s come a long way in the short time that we’ve had him, and we’re so incredibly grateful to have him in our lives.
If you’re thinking about getting a pet, I seriously can’t encourage you enough to consider rescuing an animal. There are just so many “Omars” out there needing a good home that the last thing we should be doing as a society is breeding more pets, which directly results in other animals then having to be euthanized. The internet is littered with different rescue groups, so it’s never been more convenient to find a pet to your liking, and the Humane Society is also a great place to start your search as well.

Today Omar Little turns 2! At least that’s what the rescue group told us when we adopted him. Given though that he was a stray before being saved from the kill shelter, it’s probably any one’s guess what his official birthday is, but we’re happy to make it today. In honor of the lil guy’s special day, I’ve decided to post some pics of him all week.
Above: Omar waits patiently on the Fess Parker lawn during a picnic the three of us had in wine country a couple months back.

Introducing the newest member of the Garr/Suffern clan…Omar Little Suffern! His namesake is one of the greatest characters of all time, and our favorite – Omar Little – from the show The Wire. We adopted this little guy from the good folks at Wild and Tame, It’s All the Same, who rescued Omar from a kill shelter on the day he was supposed to have been exterminated. Apparently, he’s about a year old and is a mix of daschund, doxie and chihuahua, thus his “little” frame. We’ve had Omar for a few days now, and we’re absolutely in love with him (though I think our cat, Maya, is probably gonna need just a bit more time to adjust).

Our little fur ball loves being in the annual holiday card, so the above was our pic for this year (in all likely hood, we’re aware that she probably has no real concept of the holidays nor holiday greeting cards, but we like to think she likes it).
Happy Holidays to you and yours, and here’s to lots of treats in the new year to come!

Here’s a shot of a cute little Pygmy goat at Animal Acres, a sanctuary for rescued farm animals located 45 minutes north of Los Angeles. For those that have never been, Animal Acres is a really special place, particularly for Kim and me. Being able to spend time with these animals (they’re open to the public every Sunday), whether it be petting a pig or feeding a goat or talking with a turkey, completely reaffirms our decision to be vegetarian because there’s no denying that these creatures have unique and individual personalities, much like any cat or dog. Personally knowing these animals, it’s now impossible for us to ever think of them again as mere meat products created to be bred for slaughter in factory farms simply to satisfy our taste buds.
We’re so grateful that there’s a place like Animal Acres out there. Over the past several years, we’ve been extremely fortunate to have done to several events with them under the banner of Kim’s bakeshop, and needless to say, we’re really looking forward to working with them in the new year to come.
