Florida pt.6

the white crane

It was a white crane
It was a helpless thing
Upon a red stain
With an arrow, its wing

And it called and cried
And it called and cried so

Florida pt.5

Sharks-Teeth

One of my favorite past times while we’re down here in Florida is to look for sharks teeth as the beaches in Venice (where my in-laws own a winter home) contain the greatest concentration of fossilized teeth in the United States.   The teeth above, we found yesterday, and in a good hour, you can easily find a couple dozen or so if you’re looking closely.  Which never fails to make me wonder, just how many sharks are still out there in the water with so many teeth lingering on the beach?  Needless to say, I spend much more time on the beach than in the water.

Florida pt.3

jellyfish

Here’s a shot of a jellyfish at the Mote Aquarium in Sarasota, which we visited yesterday with our little nephews.  The Mote is really an amazing place with all sorts of interesting marine life on display from spotted dolphins to sand bar sharks, to 10 foot manatees and 200 pound tortoises.  Needless to say, my nephews weren’t the only ones who’s eyes were filled with wonder at these incredible creatures.

Bo

bo

Here’s a shot I took of my friend Kristie’s dog, Bo, back when he was a pup.  I just love those eyes and can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking.  This pic kind of reminds me of the amazing film, Baraka, and specifically, the many shots of animals in the piece and the human quality of their eyes.  It’s just so unfortunate that as a species, we so often ignore how much we have in common with all of the other animals we share this planet with…

Just Hanging Around

squirrel on the porch

I took this shot the other day after watching this guy lounge like this on our porch for quite awhile.  I finally had to get the camera and sneak up to the glass door, so as not to spook him, though he wasn’t bothered by me in the slightest.  He’s kind of like our outside pet squirrel – in that he likes to hang out on our porch and eat grapefruits and clementines from the tress in the front yard.  He likes to leave us half-eaten pieces of fruit just so we know he’s been there, and he’s also fond of digging around in my potted plants.  However, this was the first time I’d seen him strike this pose.  And for a moment, I think I envied him.

I don’t really know what’s going on in this photo, but it definitely makes me smile.  Taken at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

Bird on a Wire

Like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
