SXSW ‘11 pt.1

ZZ Top

Yup, it’s that time of the year again!  SXSW came rolling into the streets of Austin this past week, and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the awesome annual music festival for yet another year.  I saw some great shows, and I’ve got a slew of pics from my four days in the liberal blueberry of the Lone Star State that I’ll be posting throughout the week.  Seemed appropriate though to start with half of ZZ Top, who dropped by to guest spot on a song during The Cringe’s set at Rachel Ray’s Feedback Party.  Now I can’t really say that I’m a huge fan of Rachel’s, but I do love that she has her husband’s band play at her party, which she did last year as well.  Plus, it was pretty great to see that actual beard in person.

Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow

Epcot

“But the most exciting and, by far, the most important part of our Florida project, in fact, the heart of everything well be doing in Disney World, will be our experimental prototype city of tomorrow. We call it EPCOT…(it) will take its cue from the new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative centers of American industry. It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducing testing and demonstrating new materials and new systems. And EPCOT will always be a showcase to the world of the ingenuity and imagination of American free enterprise.”

Alex’s New Hat

ALex Ebert

Last night, I had the privilege of filming Alex Ebert (of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros), who played an inspiring show at the Urban Lounge in support of Tim DeCristopher.  After nearly two years and nine postponements, Tim’s trial finally begins today, and in a few short minutes, his supporters will be marching through the streets to the federal courthouse.  For today at least, the epicenter of the environmental movement is in Salt Lake City!

Mr. Brainwash

life is beautiful

A couple summers back, I was in London working on a documentary, when my buddy, Paul Pilot, and I came across this piece of street art in a tunnel filled with graffiti.  At the time, I figured the “life is beautiful” text had been added separately to the shot of Madonna & Britney making out.  I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition, so I took a pic of it and hadn’t given much thought to the matter until I saw the image appear in the documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, which I just watched last week.

This film, directed by the phenomenal street artist, Banksy, is one my favorites of 2010.  It’s nearly impossible to describe this wormhole of a tale of art inspiring art inspiring commerce, so I’ll just say that you should see it, if you haven’t already.  There are those that question whether the whole thing is a farce, but I can’t even begin to imagine how that could be.  But if it is, I think that would make me admire the film all the more…
